Kris, Dagger

16th century

Indonesia/Malaysia

Steel, buffalo bone

Originating in the East Indies this Kris has a blade with a double edge in watered steel with a “waves” pamor or pattern, with an uncommon depth, showing a notable manufacture probably dating from the 16th century, is not earlier. It has three curves dapur luk or bener related to fire Agni – “he who is three times three”, and also presents two waves and the trunk of the god Ganesha.

The hulu, hilt, made of porous bone, possibly a femur, is sculpted in the shape of the monkey-god Hanuman. This is strangling the serpent Naga Raja with one of his hands while he steps on it with his foot.

On the other hand he holds something he is taking from the serpent, probably an egg. It is an interpretation of a scene from the Hindu epic Ramayana. The pendok, scabbard, is all made from precious wood with silver mounts.

(The kris or keris is an asymmetrical dagger most strongly associated with the culture of Indonesia, but also indigenous to Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei. It is known as kalis in the southern Philippines. The kris is famous for its distinctive wavy blade, but in the past, most had straight blades.)
